What is Outside the Box?

Welcome to Outside the Box! Founded by journalist and educator Dr. Janeane Bernstein. In 2019, she embarked on a new journey when she became a published author. Her first book Get the Funk Out - %^&* Happens, What to Do Next! GTFO is based on her radio show, Get the Funk Out! started in 2011 after the tragic loss of her childhood friend, and the loss of her father to stage four cancer.

In 2020, Dr. Bernstein started Outside the Box, a mental health initiative for those struggling in the pandemic. Outside the Box became a  Community Partner with University of California Irvine's  School of Social Ecology Field Study Program in 2021.

Her movement is intended to inspire you to become the best version of yourself, as she will teach you the importance of emotional regulation, kindness, and compassion for yourself and others. Her mission for the movement is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and to create experiences that address our loneliness epidemic and social disconnnect. Whether she is creating an activity, workshop or hosting her podcast, she creates a safe and open space to welcome conversations around trauma, grief, depression, loneliness, anxiety, among many other challenges we all experience.

In the podcast, she gets candid about her own struggles as she touches on topics within education, mindfulness, health and wellness, and so much more. The driving force is a commitment to breaking boundaries of social norms, apathy, and facilitating on-going conversations about real issues people struggle with each and every day.

Through interviews with people from all walks of life, Janeane strives to create sustainable, societal change, especially for struggling college students. Guests in the series include people from all parts of the world who tell their experiences and tips surrounding mental health. Some are public figures from music, pop culture, and entertainment and others, experts in mental health, emotional intelligence, psychology and wellness. Episodes are available on YouTube,  Apple and Spotify.

What does the butterfly symbolize to you? For many people, a butterfly symbolizes a metamorphosis, a change, or a new direction. If you have met Dr. Janeane, you will know this image means a lot to her personally and professionally.

Have you seen our stickers on the UCI campus?

Joy brought her own vision into play here by incorporating the University of California anteater mascot into the Outside the Box image. This is a very popular sticker with UCI students at OTB events on campus!

The Challenge

OUTSIDE THE BOX was created to help people affected by COVID-19. Everyone has had to reimagine their life, but knowing what to do next is the challenge.  We all know that feeling created through a conversation when you see a new path illuminated, a potential pivot to something new and different, a boost to your self-esteem and a road to optimism.

The Challenge

The Challenge

The Challenge

Staying optimistic can be a daily challenge and some do not have the insight and connections to stay positive about their futures. Talking about mental health, resilience, current social issues, and self-care strategies is an essential part of creating life-long wellness routines. The power of connection and kindness to ourselves and others has never been more imperative.

The Long-Term

The Challenge

The Long-Term

Everything changed in 2020 and today's students and adults are tremendously impacted by the pandemic. There has never been a more important time to talk about what it means to become a better human, the power of creativity, and how to build resilience and life skills. We created the OTB podcast to spread awareness and compassion for those who struggle with their mental health, and to boost compassion and positivity.
