Imagine what it feels like to be a high school or college student right now. Their internship or career paths are no longer a reality, many students feel isolated, lonely, and missing out on life’s milestones. They are living in a mental health pandemic; in a world no one could have imagined. We are a resource.
OUTSIDE THE BOX was created to help people affected by COVID-19. Everyone has had to reimagine their life, but knowing what to do next is the challenge. We all know that feeling created through a conversation when you see a new path illuminated, a potential pivot to something new and different, a boost to your self-esteem and a road to optimism.
Staying optimistic can be a daily challenge and some do not have the insight and connections to stay positive about their futures. Talking about mental health, resilience, current social issues, and self-care strategies is an essential part of creating life-long wellness routines. The power of connection and kindness to ourselves and others has never been more imperative.
Everything changed in 2020 and today's students and adults are tremendously impacted by the pandemic. There has never been a more important time to talk about what it means to become a better human, the power of creativity, and how to build resilience and life skills. So, I created the OTB podcast to spread awareness and compassion for mental health.
Janeane Bernstein is a journalist, speaker, and radio host/producer at KUCI 88.9fm, and host of the new series, OUTSIDE THE BOX. She earned a doctorate from Boston University in Educational Media & Technology from the Curriculum and Teaching program and graduated from Syracuse University with her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education & Communications. She is a 2021 Columbia University Journalism Fellow for the Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center & Columbia Journalism.
In 2019, her first book, GET THE FUNK OUT, %^&* Happens, What to Do Next! was published by Post Hill Press, distributed by Simon & Schuster and Audible.com. The book is about creating resilience and strength through life’s curveballs, and knowing what to focus on when you find yourself in a tough place.
In May 2020, Janeane launched a new on-line series called OUTSIDE THE BOX. In response to the millions of people out of work, she features industry experts offering advice on how to find work remotely or pivot to a new venture; this also includes a mentoring series for high school and college students to make meaningful connections, receive guidance on finding opportunities, and to increase positivity and improve mental health.
She currently speaks to students and adults about finding resilience in challenging times, making mental, physical, and emotional health a priority, the power of mentorship, finding meaning and purpose, and her CARE Initiative.
There has never been a better time to think OUTSIDE THE BOX.
