The pandemic disrupted millions of lives from students on up. If you are struggling with your mental health, feeling disconnected from your personal and professional lives, you are not alone. The mental health crisis prior to Covid-19 is now a mental health pandemic. Outside the Box is here to help.
"I love the band Talking Heads, but I don’t want to be one."
I don’t lecture—I create experiences. I design a well-crafted foundation where audiences bring their voices, lived experiences, and insights to the forefront. Together, we spark change and drive the experience in real time.
They are the engine that creates change. I’m simply the framework that makes it happen. - Founder,. Janeane Bernstein, EdD
At Outside the Box Series, we create immersive experiences that empower students to lead change in their communities. Today’s youth are navigating a loneliness epidemic, amplified by phones, social media, and AI, which can increase stress, anxiety, and disconnection. Social health matters more than ever, and having time offline to focus on personal growth and wellbeing is critical.
Through custom workshops—like Becoming Better Humans: Tools for Connection in a Disconnected World, The Art of Small Talk, How Are You, Really?, and The Power of Creativity for Mental Health—combined with student-led panels, we provide interactive programs that make mental health, empathy, and connection tangible and actionable.
Students are the engine for change, and our framework gives them the tools and structure to make it happen. We promote mental, emotional, and social health in everything we do, helping students create a life offline that prioritizes meaning, purpose, personal growth, and wellbeing, ultimately fostering kindness, compassion, empathy, and better humans.
Dr. Janeane Bernstein is a journalist, educator, and social impact leader working at the intersection of mental health, storytelling, and human connection. Through interviews with people from all walks of life, Janeane explores pathways to sustainable social change, with a focus on supporting struggling college students. Guests span the globe and share personal experiences and insights on mental health, resilience, and well-being. In 2025, Bernstein founded the Outside the Box Institute, a social benefit organization with a mission to end loneliness, build connection, and inspire better humans.

OUTSIDE THE BOX was created to help people affected by COVID-19. Everyone has had to reimagine their life, but knowing what to do next is the challenge. We all know that feeling created through a conversation when you see a new path illuminated, a potential pivot to something new and different, a boost to your self-esteem and a road to optimism.

Staying optimistic can be a daily challenge and some do not have the insight and connections to stay positive about their futures. Talking about mental health, resilience, current social issues, and self-care strategies is an essential part of creating life-long wellness routines. The power of connection and kindness to ourselves and others has never been more imperative.

Everything changed in 2020 and today's students and adults are tremendously impacted by the pandemic. There has never been a more important time to talk about what it means to become a better human, the power of creativity, and how to build resilience and life skills. We created the OTB podcast to spread awareness and compassion for those who struggle with their mental health, and to boost compassion and positivity.

Our stellar designer, Joy, created this new design for OTB's student led workshop called
"How are YOU, really?"
You can find these new stickers wherever we have tabling, live events and other activities.

What does the butterfly symbolize to you? For many people, a butterfly symbolizes a metamorphosis, a change, or a new direction. If you have met Dr. Janeane, you will know this image means a lot to her personally and professionally.

Joy brought her own vision into play here by incorporating the University of California anteater mascot into the Outside the Box image. This is a very popular sticker with UCI students at OTB events on campus!
